Brewery Walk Among WA’s Top Trails
FREMANTLE’S unique Hotels and Brewery Walk, which takes in more than 16 of the City’s finest drinking establishments, past and present, has been named among the state’s Top Tourist Trails for 2008 at a special ceremony on Tuesday, October 28.
Top Trails WA is an initiative of the Australian Tourism Development Program. Organisers called for nominations for trails that provided the best experience for visitors. More than 160 nominations from around the state vied for the honour. Only 50 were short-listed and from there just 25 named as the State’s best at the final judging.
The Hotel and Brewery Walk shares its Top Trail status with such iconic routes as the challenging Bibbulmun Track and the Cape to Cape Walk in the State’s South West.
Fremantle’s winning entry focuses on the historical West End, starting at the Orient in High Street and finishing at Little Creatures at Fishing Boat Harbour. In between, people who appreciate a fine drop of ale can bend their elbow at Clancy’s Irish Pub, the Sail and Anchor and The Esplanade Hotel. Some, like the Commercial Hotel on High Street have been closed to drinkers for years and re-invented as other things, like a backpackers hostel.
The City’s Manager for Economic Development, David Duncanson was on hand to receive the award.
He said Fremantle’s winning trail is among 11 showcasing a wide variety of the Port’s rich culture. They include a convict trail, writers walk and a retail and fashion walk.
He said the win was recognition of the huge effort that had gone into developing the Fremantle Trails project.
“Most of the nominations for this were bush walks and obviously Fremantle’s entry was in an urban setting.
“For it to have earned a spot among the State’s Top Trails reflects our status as being at the very forefront of trails development in the state,” he said.
