Council versus

The Rest of the World Cricket Match

Not adverse to a stoush in the name of a good cause, the City of Fremantle has thrown down the challenge for an Inaugural Council Versus the Rest of the World Cricket Match at Stevens Reserve, Swanbourne Street, Fremantle on November 30, with registration starting at 9.30am.

Organised by Mayor Peter Tagliaferri, the match has attracted seven teams; Fremantle City Council, WA Police, Denning Deane Lawyers, Fremantle Ports, Notre Dame University, Community Newspapers and the Fremantle Herald.

The charity match could tap into some traditional rivalries like police against lawyers, and the Fremantle Herald against the Port’s ‘other’ local paper, the Fremantle Gazette, for some exciting over arm action.

Each team has paid $150 for the privilege of throwing down a few balls with the money going directly to Fremantle PCYC.

The Mayor’s team mates are deputy mayor John Dowson, councillors Doug Thompson, Alice King, John Alberti, Shirley Mackay, Robert Fittock, Jon Strachan and Brad Pettitt with corporate services director Glen Dougall volunteering to make up the numbers. One cap is yet to be filled.

Councillor Bill Massie is 12th man and Cr Donna Haney has been forced to spectate because of injury.

The teams will play limited over cricket with the winner taking out a specially engraved trophy.

The Mayor said it was very much a family fun day and he encouraged everyone to pack a picnic lunch and watch a few overs. The clubhouse’s bar facilities will be open.
