Only two weeks left to help people with disabilities: nominate now

16 Jul 2008
THERE'S only two weeks left to nominate for the City of Fremantle's Disability Access Consulting Committee, designed to promote access and inclusion for people with disabilities.

Under the Disability Services Act, local governments are required to develop and implement a disability access and inclusion plan, outlining ways people with disabilities will have equal access to facilities and services.

The consulting committee’s aim is to provide strategic advice to the City of Fremantle, ensuring all council facilities, services, programs, information and processes are accessible and inclusive for people with disabilities and their carers.

Meeting once a month, the committee monitors how the disability access and inclusion plan is implemented and reviews it annually.

“Providing equal opportunities for people with disabilities is an integral part of our society, allowing them to participate in decision-making processes and public consultation,” City of Fremantle disability access and inclusion project officer Adelaide Wood said.

“By giving them easier access to facilities, they are more able to get to the places where they can have their say.

“Identifying barriers to accessibility – in places such as buildings, roads, footpaths and so on – and then developing planning strategies to overcome them is a key component of improving community disability access.”

People with disabilities, their families and carers, local businesses and service providers and other community members are eligible to be part of the committee. Nominations close July 30.
