Freo youth create…

21 Jan 2010

FIVE tutors will descend into Fremantle over the next couple of weeks bringing out the creative side of young people in the community who have always wanted to explore different creative mediums but never had the chance, until now.

The City of Fremantle, for the first time will be offering the free Live it Now Creative Youth Workshops 2010 with the work produced showcased throughout National Youth Week in April 2010. The workshops which are programmed over the next few weeks will cover a variety of specialties including Reinventing fashion, Devising theatre, Modelling fashion, Creative drawing, and Creative writing.

The first workshop, creative writing, will teach writing structure and confidence in a variety of styles from poems to monologues. The workshop will be facilitated by Curtin university creative writing graduate, Daniel Kershaw who has been creatively writing for several years now and recently been mentoring up-and-coming writers at the Barking Gecko Theatre Company.

Daniel is looking forward to passing on his knowledge and experiences, and happy about being given the opportunity to be a tutor.

“I’m excited about this. My goal is to encourage the young people to develop their own creative style” He said. “I will be there to guide them, but I will leave it up to them to express themselves in their own unique way”

Daniel, still only 27, has already gained recognition for his writing including two of his most proud moments; nominated for best script 2006 Bunbury Southwest Drama Festival for his work Awakenings, and the most original play 2007 at the ITA State Dramafest for his work All Over Again.

City of Fremantle Youth worker and workshop organiser, Danni Ashton said there had been demand for more creative outlets around the City especially from the younger demographic and hoped the workshops would become an annual event.

“Fremantle is already seen as a creative City which is home to artists, musicians, and fashion designers, but there aren’t too many options for youth to express themselves creatively, especially when they have no formal training” Danni said.

“The important thing is that these workshops cater for beginners who just want to give it a go.”

National Youth Week is a joint Australian, State, Territory and Local Government initiative encouraging young people aged 12-25 to share ideas, attend live events, voice their opinions, showcase their talents, contribute to the community and have fun.
People interested can register by ringing Danni on 9432 9515, but spots are limited. The workshops are targeted at those aged between 12 and 25 and will be held at the Fremantle Arts Centre, except for Devising Theatre which will be held at the Reception Room at the Fremantle Town Hall.
