Branch out on National Tree Day in Fremantle
19 Jun 2008
National Tree Day, initiated by Planet Ark, is Australia's biggest community tree planting event. Since 1996 more than 11 million native trees, shrubs and grasses have been planted at National Tree Day sites.
Growing trees can assist in addressing global warming, as a single tree will absorb about one tonne of carbon dioxide over its lifetime, and native trees provide food and shelter for local wildlife as well as much needed shade and beauty! National Tree Day is celebrated on the last Sunday in July – this year it will be held on July 27 with community plantings around Australia.
To mark this occasion, the City of Fremantle will hold several events. A community tree planting event will be held in Booyeembara Park on Sunday, July 27, from 10am until midday with a free lunch provided afterwards. For more information, go to http://treeday.planetark.com/find-a-site/
A talk will be given in Fremantle City Library from 10am-11am, Friday, July 25, by City of Fremantle Landscape Architect Giles Pickard, who will explain the importance of trees and vegetation in the urban environment and show photographs of various exciting and innovative building developments that integrate plants.
A photographic competition, open to all who live or work in Fremantle, is also being held to showcase the beauty of trees in the region. To be in the running for prizes, submit a photo of one of your favourite Fremantle trees, or a landscape featuring trees. Selected photos will be exhibited in the City Administration Building foyer in the week leading up to National Tree Day.
Fill in a form (available at the Service & Information Centre, 8 William Street, Fremantle) and drop off your pictures, or CDs at the same location or post to: National Tree Day Photographic Competition, Planning and Development Services, City of Fremantle PO Box 807, Fremantle, 6959.
Photographs can be submitted in printed form (no bigger than A4) or in electronic form on CD (preferably 300 dpi or higher) or e-mailed to isabellaj@fremantle.wa.gov.au.
The maximum size for email attachments is 8Mb. Digitally-altered images will be accepted but the original images must also be included. Entries close 5pm, Wednesday, July 16. For more information, contact the City of Fremantle Sustainability Officer Isabella Jennings on 9432 9735.
