Fremantle Visitor Guides: celebrating one year of helping and welcoming
05 Aug 2008
FRIENDLY help has been at hand for people coming to the port city over the past year, thanks to the Fremantle Visitor Guides.
Operating out of Fremantle Railway Station, the guides are volunteers who have an interest in passing on their Fremantle knowledge to visitors.
About 20 guides volunteer their time from Wednesday to Sunday, helping visitors discover all things Fremantle, and now also venture out to other popular locations such as the Fremantle Esplanade, Fishing Boat Harbour and Kings Square to lend assistance.
Launched in August last year, the number of guides has continued to grow – and the service may possibly be extended over the summer months to run seven days.
“The idea for the guides came about after it was acknowledged there was a need to greet visitors at the railway station and to direct them to the various attractions in Fremantle,” City of Fremantle Economic Development & Marketing Manager David Duncanson said.
“Our guides have proven to be a great resource with plenty of information about Fremantle to help people as they visit our city.
“Guides meet monthly in Fremantle to keep up-to-date with what’s happening in and around the city, ensuring their fingers are on the pulse.
“Given the number of guides continues to grow and the service looks likely to expand, it’s testament to the success of the idea.”
People interested in volunteering as a Fremantle Visitor Guide should contact the Fremantle Volunteer Centre on 9335 3394.
